The royal kitchens were huge and usually smelled only of
sugar.
That night, they smelled different.
I worked carefully, using rice flour, butter powder,
rosemary, and tiny grains of sea salt that Mallow had secretly brought from
Earth.
I created something simple:
Thin, crisp, savoury, and gentle.
At sunset, I presented my test.
First, the King and Queen ate a perfect sweet truffle.
Then, they ate the cracker.
Their faces showed shock — then curiosity.
Finally, they tasted the truffle again.
They froze.
Then they cried.
Not from sadness — but joy so strong it hurt.
“The sweetness feels new again,” King Icing whispered.
“The balance is restored,” Queen Glaze said softly.
